Spontaneity is often the spice of life. I don’t do it often enough. With spontaneity there is no room for over-thinking and over-planning and no room for backing down or thinking up excuses.
You just do it…..and in my experience rarely regret it.
Towards the end of last week, a group of three of my
colleagues and I decided to take a weekend camping trip to Snowdonia, about a
four hour drive way in the middle of the Welsh countryside. We packed up the
car (literally packed it full) and the four of us squeezed in around the food
and tents.
Our mission was to climb Snowdon. It’s not a huge mountain
(1085m above sea level), but still a challenge and a great opportunity for mental
strength and personal reflection. Every time you see a ridge ahead, you pace
yourself and tell yourself ‘just a few more steps to go’ only to find the track
swings round and continues on up…but you keep going. We climbed through the
sun, through the mist, through the chill wind and through the rain…one foot in
front of the other.
We reached the summit and it was a glorious moment. A moment
to make the worn out feet and aching thighs all worthwhile. Mind over matter….you
can climb any mountain, be it physical or mental, you’ve just got to keep going,
even when the path swings wide.
What is a Mantra for Monday?
Silent Sunday no. 29: My mountain climb began with an overnight
stay in a tent overlooking this beautiful lake. The morning sun was dazzling to
my sleepy eyes.
